FLAHERTY WILLIAM E A

July 5, 2008

resident of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 27, 2008, at his summer residence in Bay Harbor, Michigan. He was born in Washington, D.C. on June 14, 1935, to William C. and Rosemary L. Flaherty. Flaherty is a graduate of Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, with a B.A. in Economics and completed course work for a Master's Degree in Economics. He began his remarkable career with the J. L. Hudson Division of Dayton Hudson Corporation (1955-1959) in business research and with the Chrysler Corporation (1959-1961) in sales forecasting. His outstanding career with Blue Cross and Blue Shield began in 1961 when he joined Michigan Blue Cross. He served in several marketing management positions, director of corporate planning and employee relations, and then as vice president of administration. He was promoted to executive vice president in 1972 and served in that capacity until he joined the Delaware Plan of Blue Cross and Blue Shield in 1975 where he served as its President and Chief Executive Officer until 1979. Flaherty was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida in January 1979 and served in that capacity until his retirement in June 1998. The company's numerous successes during his tenure were directly attributed to his outstanding leadership and commitment to the success of the company and each of its employees. In addition to being President and CEO, Flaherty was elected Chairman of the Board in September 1995. Following his retirement, he continued to serve as chairman until December 2001. At the national level, Flaherty served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, in Chicago, its Executive Committee, and numerous Association committees and projects. His counsel was often highly sought by many organizations in the health care financing industry at both the national and local levels, as well as educational and financial institutions. In Florida, in cooperation with the governor's office, he served on numerous task forces and work groups related to health care responsibility. Flaherty also served as a member of the Board of the Florida Council of 100, the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Jacksonville Branch, and the University of North Florida's Foundation Board. He had a passion for learning and he was a great teacher and mentor to numerous colleagues and friends whose lives have been enriched by his guidance and counsel. Flaherty had a life-long passion for sailing and raced sailboats in Michigan in his youth. He also enjoyed hunting, golf and was an avid reader. His interest in these activities involved various club memberships. His greatest passion, however, was his family. His devotion to his family is legendary and his children and grandchildren brought him great joy. Flaherty was predeceased by his loving mother Rosemary Flaherty, father William Flaherty and brother Paul. Bill leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 49 and one-half years, Josie, and their five children and seven grandchildren who affectionately know him as Pop Pop: Mary Jo Keller and her husband Andrew, of Petoskey, Michigan, and their children Megan Rose and Thomas; Margaret Fenner, her son William Haering and her husband Jerry, San Francisco, California; William, and his wife Phillipa, of Evergreen, Colorado, and their children Hannah and Alex; Kathleen Durfee and her husband Robert, of Sarasota, Florida, and their children Caitlyn and Amanda; and Maureen Ann Flaherty of Sarasota, Florida. Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 7, 2008, at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Mandarin Chapel, located at 11801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida. A celebration of Bill's life will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 11730 Old St. Augustine Road, Jacksonville, Florida. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of William E. Flaherty to the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy scholarships, 8400 South Cambridge, Detroit, MI 48221, or the charity of your choice.
